Before I get into this post, it’s worth pointing out that no matter what form of exercise you do, if you have a poor diet, you’re unlikely to get the results you want. And yes, Im speaking from bitter experience 🙂

It’s the combination of a healthy diet and exercise that’ll see you shed the pounds.

So, now we’ve cleared that up, let’s get back to the original question: Can Pilates help you lose weight?

The simple answer is yes. However, it’s not a quick fix. If you want to lose weight fast, Pilates is not for you. But if you’re looking to not only lose weight but tone up and look slimmer, Pilates will help you achieve your dream body, over time.

How long will it take to see the weight come off?

Pilates founder, Joseph Pilates once said: “In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.”

The beauty of this type of strength training is it can have a dramatic effect on the way your body looks. Pilates may not burn hundreds of calories like running or spinning, but it builds muscle and tones the entire body, which changes the body shape over time. You may well feel the effects of Pilates in the fit of your clothes before you start dropping the pounds.

Cardio addict? Try a Pilates jumpboard class

That being said, some Pilates classes are designed to make you sweat. If you want a cardio burn, try a reformer Jumpboard class!

What is a jumpboard?

The jumpboard is an attachment that converts a reformer into a horizontal jumping machine. A padded plate, it fixes to the front of the reformer where the footbar is. While lying with your back on the carriage, you adjust the spring tension and jump on the board as if it were the floor.

The spring tension takes gravity out of the equation, so it feels like you’re jumping on the moon. Its great fun. But it’s tough. The cardio/plyometrics/pilates exercises involve jumping, kicking, pressing, lifting and rotating movements, all designed to challenge and fatigue.

Expect to sweat and feel your legs (and lungs) burning!

Here’s the jumpboard in action!
